About me
Hi, I'm Karen...
I was a terrified teenager ... terrified of learning to drive! Yet here I am, training others to drive, so what happened in between?
I passed my test first time, but lacked confidence in my ability for ten years. Then my twin daughters were born and everything changed; I had precious cargo to protect and lack of confidence was only going to hold me back from taking them anywhere. I gave myself a talking to and chose to put the insecurity behind me. By the time my girls were 8, the idea of becoming a driving instructor was taking root - I wanted to teach them to drive myself!
In the meantime, I got a job as Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant at a multi-ethnic Primary School in Reading. Four years later I became a Classroom Teaching Assistant and taught French across Years 3 to 6, alongside supporting students in all aspects of the curriculum.
Before I knew it my daughters were 16 ... and I hadn't started training ... so I decided to become an advanced driver through the IAM's Skill for Life course. That was my challenge in 2015 and I passed the advanced driving test at the first attempt with Grade 1 (Excellent) in every category, meaning I am on the IAM's F1RST Register. This qualification is considered to be equal to RoSPA Gold standard, and the process has instilled in me a passion for road safety.
My daughters turned 17 in 2016 and I achieved my ambition of teaching them to drive, with both of them being full licence holders by the 25th April 2017. The very next day I received my box of training materials from LDC and here I am ready to help you on your journey of learning to drive. So, whether you're terrified or raring to go, together we'll tailor your training to suit you and your goals, and help you on your way to gaining a skill you'll never regret.
